Assessments

several NEBOSH certificate-level qualifications now include a digital assessment, also known as an open book examination (OBE). This format enables you to complete your NEBOSH assessment in a safe environment where you can focus, like your home. Do not assume that an OBE is a simple substitute for invigilated exams; NEBOSH is a globally recognized provider of rigorous and applicable credentials and assessments. You’ll be asked questions that are different from those in our past closed-book exams. You will be given a scenario that details a real-world workplace and circumstance. Additionally, you will be required to complete a number of activities using the information in the scenario and the background information you have learned from your studies and review.

You can expect to see questions that ask What? Could? How? Why? and Where? These will not only assess what you know but what you can do with that knowledge; our examiners will be looking for you to demonstrate analytical, evaluation, and creative skills as well as critical thinking. Whatever format the question, moreover it will relate to the syllabus and learning outcomes of your qualification. To help you during the open book examination. You can use resources such as notes, textbooks, learning materials, and online resources. It’s important to remember that cutting and pasting from a textbook or online resource will not provide you with a good answer – you will need to really understand the topic and apply your understanding to the scenario given in the question paper.

Further details on the OBE can be found on the NEBOSH website at this link Exam info

Closing Interviews

Closing interviews

every learner must attend a closing interview with their Learning Partner after the IG1 exam.

Although the interviews are not assessed NEBOSH will not publish your results if you do not attend. The closing interview is a key part of NEBOSH’s malpractice approach and includes multiple steps:

Learning Partners are given a list of interview questions that are specific to the exam and are designed to ensure you have the underlying knowledge and understanding behind your responses. The Learning Partners ask the questions randomly, so no two learners will be asked the identical set of questions; this prevents learners from guessing questions or advising others. Learning Partners complete a Closing Interview Record Sheet for every learner. NEBOSH specifies the interviewer must have a NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) or at least three years of experience in the health and safety industry. Before the interview, they will read your examination paper so they can ask more detailed questions if required.

You will be required to do the following during the interview:

To make sure the closing interviews are carried out correctly NEBOSH silently observes a targeted selection of interviews AND scrutinizes Closing Interview Record Sheets. If a Learning Partner or NEBOSH suspects malpractice at any time they will investigate further.

The NEBOSH IG2 assessment

At the learner’s place of employment, a risk assessment known as the NEBOSH IG2 assessment should be conducted. The aim of this assessment is to practically apply knowledge and understand what you have gained from your studies. To do this, you will need to complete a risk assessment of your workplace. The learner should do a general risk assessment in their workplace, profiling and prioritizing risks, inspecting the workplace, recognizing a range of common hazards, evaluating risks, taking account of current controls, recommending further control measures, and planning actions.

Your assessment can either be handwritten or completed electronically. The assessment pack contains two sets of forms; one for a handwritten assessment and the other for an electronic assessment. Lastly, Your assessment must be submitted to your Learning Partner electronically as a PDF (portable document format) document. Your Learning Partner will tell you the date that they need to receive your assessment. Once received, your assessment will be uploaded to NEBOSH for marking. Certainly, If you fail to submit it. Your assessment to your Learning Partner by the date requested you will be marked ‘absent’.

Achieving NEBOSH IG qualification

The NEBOSH IG has two-unit assessments; the candidate must achieve a ‘Pass’ in each unit to be awarded the qualification. Candidates will have five years to complete their qualifications. The five-year period starts from the date that they passed their first successful unit (NBOSH calls this the ‘declaration date). Any unit that is five years or older won’t count toward qualification; students must retake this/these unit(s) if they wish to complete the qualification.

NEBOSH IG grading and issue of qualification parchment

The qualification grade is based only on the result of the question paper (Unit IG1). Yet, before parchment can be granted, students must receive a “Pass” in both the IG1 and IG2 sections. The grading boundaries are as follows:

The qualification grade is based on the result from Unit IG1

Students consider having finished the certification when they complete both units. After their final successful unit, NEBOSH will send out qualification parchment within 40 working days. Unit certifications will only be provided upon NEBOSH’s formal request. When NEBOSH announces the outcome of the second successful unit, learners will have 20 working days to either:

Exam Re-sitting unit(s)

Learners can re-sit a unit for the following reasons:

There is no limit to the number of times a learner can re-sit unit(s) within the five-year period. A refund will not be given if the learner registers to re-sit a unit before an original unit result is known. If the learner’s re-sit result is lower than the original mark, they will keep the original mark awarded for the unit.

Re-sitting NEBOSH IG1 Exam to improve the grade

The learner who wants to try to enhance their grade in Unit IG1, must notify us in writing within 20 working days of their second successful unit’s declaration date. Otherwise, a qualification parchment with the original declaration date will be provided automatically.
