IELTS Academic Test

If you plan to pursue higher education or seek professional registration in an English-speaking country, the IELTS Academic test may be required. The IELTS Academic test measures your English proficiency at an academic level to assess your readiness for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, or for professional roles such as a doctor, nurse, teacher, or lawyer. This test evaluates your skills in four areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Although the Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both the Academic and General Training tests, the Reading and Writing sections vary between them.

IELTS General Training

The IELTS General Training test assesses your English-language abilities in work or social settings. If you're aiming to study at the secondary level, enter vocational training, move abroad for work, or migrate to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, or the USA, you may need to take this test. It measures proficiency in four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. While the Listening and Speaking sections are identical in both the General Training and Academic tests, the Reading and Writing sections differ.

Understand IELTS Scores

In the IELTS test, your English-language skills are assessed using band scores ranging from 0 to 9, with each score indicating a specific level of proficiency.

For example, although there may be occasional errors, improper usage, and misunderstandings, a user with a band score of 6 is considered competent and generally has a solid command of the language. These users, particularly in familiar circumstances, are able to utilize and comprehend highly complicated language.

Your IELTS results will feature a band score for each test section—Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening—along with an overall band score. The overall score is calculated as the average of your individual section scores. Band scores are presented in whole or half bands and are rounded to the nearest half or whole number.

For instance, the average would be 6.25 if you received 6.5 in reading, 5 in writing, 7 in speaking, and 6.5 in listening. Your overall band score would be 6.5, rounded up from this number.
