IELTS Academic Test

If you intend to pursue higher education or obtain professional registration in an English-speaking country, you may need to take the IELTS Academic test. The IELTS Academic test evaluates your English-language proficiency at an academic level to determine if you are prepared to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, or work in professional roles such as a doctor, nurse, teacher, or lawyer. The Academic test assesses your abilities across the four skill sets: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. While the Listening and Speaking sections are identical for both the Academic and General Training tests, the Reading and Writing sections differ between the two.

IELTS General Training

The IELTS General Training test evaluates your English-language skills in work or social contexts. If you're planning to study in secondary education, enroll in vocational training, relocate abroad for work, or migrate to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, or the USA, you may need to take the IELTS General Training test. This test measures your proficiency across four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both the IELTS General Training and Academic tests, but the Reading and Writing sections differ.

Understand IELTS Scores

In the IELTS test, your English-language abilities are evaluated using band scores, which range from 0 to 9. Each band score represents a specific level of English proficiency.

For instance, a band score of 6 indicates a competent user who generally has a good command of the language, despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage, and misunderstandings. Such users can use and understand fairly complex language, especially in familiar contexts.

Your IELTS results will include a band score for each section of the test—Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening—as well as an overall band score. The overall score is the average of your individual scores in these sections. The band scores are given in whole or half bands and are rounded up to the nearest half or whole score.

For example, if you score a 6.5 in Reading, 5 in Writing, 7 in Speaking, and 6.5 in Listening, the average would be 6.25. This score would be rounded up to 6.5 as your overall band score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my IELTS Academic results for migration purposes?

IELTS Academic and General Training are two wholly separate types of test, for two different purposes. While some individual organisations may accept an Academic result in the place of General Training, this decision is up to them. You will need to contact your specific organisation to learn more.

What is the difference between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI?

IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are the exact same test in terms of format, content, scoring and level of difficulty. The only difference is an IELTS for UKVI test is approved by the UK Home Office for work, study and migration purposes. If you take an IELTS for UKVI test, your test report form will be a little different to show you have taken an IELTS for UKVI test at an approved test centre.

What order will I complete the IELTS test in?

If you take computer-delivered IELTS, you will do the tests in the following order on the same day: Listening, Reading and Writing, with the Speaking test before or after this test session. If you take paper-based IELTS, you will do the tests in the following order: Writing, Reading and Listening. Depending on the test centre, the Speaking test can be done on the same day, or up to 7 days either before or after the test date.

What band score do I need to migrate abroad?

They will be able to provide further information, including whether native speakers need to complete the IELTS test. Even if English is your primary language, you will still need to prepare for the test.

Can i do all parts of the test on the same day?

The Listening, Reading, and Writing parts of the test are completed immediately after each other on the same day.
